Session: 2 for 1: Pre-Open Source – A History Lesson / From Idea to Deployment: Understanding Development Best Practices

Dave Stokes – Pre-Open Source – A History Lesson

Most of All Things Open’s attendees were born after the creation of Open Source Software. This means that they have no or limited knowledge of what it meant to have no interoperability between different systems, a limited ability to share code between systems, and curtailed employment opportunities. This is a quick look back at what the ‘bad old days’ entailed when you had to buy hardware, software, support, training, and supplies from a single manufacturer. You were locked in to their product and their products alone. Plus if they came out with a new computer line, you often found all of your investment in hardware, software, and training flushed away. Today many software companies opting away from open source licenses to much more restrictive vehicles that could return us to the days of yore. Those who do not remember history are doomed to pay for upgrades at least twice.
