Session: Obirdability: Building an observability system for bird songs
In this presentation, Ivana Huckova and Sven Großmann, software engineers with a passion for nature, will dive into how they leverage open source technologies such as BirdNET, Prometheus, Loki, and Grafana, to build an innovative observability solution for monitoring bird songs. With an estimated 18,000 bird species worldwide, communicating through their distinctive calls, this project aims to deepen our understanding of bird songs and the various environmental factors that influence them, including weather, pollution, and seasonal changes. While the focus is on developing a system to observe birds, the techniques and principles discussed are broadly applicable, offering insights into observability across different fields. Attendees will gain knowledge on the importance of observability, how to choose the right metrics, and the benefits of data visualization and alerts. Ultimately, we’ll explore the significant question: How can we act to ensure a world that resonates with more bird songs?
