Session: 2 for 1: Leveraging Learnings from Osquery / Balancing transparency and openness in government – lessons learned from deploying NREL OpenPATH

Zach Wasserman – Leveraging Learnings from Osquery

In the dynamic landscape of open-source technology, collaboration stands as the driving force that empowers the communities. Join us as Zach highlights effective strategies for fostering community interaction, emphasizing the vital role of collaborative tool development, and exploring how these endeavors enrich the broader ecosystem.

Drawing from his firsthand experiences co-creating osquery, Zach will share insights into the potential of cross-collaboration, showcasing how it has enhanced tool functionality and heightened security features. Through real-world examples, this session will clarify how individual contributors, IT managers, and DevOps engineers can accelerate the progress of open-source projects, creating a collective impact greater than the sum of its parts.

Aria Nolan – Balancing transparency and openness in government – lessons learned from deploying NREL OpenPATH

The federal government wants to make sure that the projects they fund are open source. OpenPATH is a project that falls under that category. It is funded by the DOE and can be self-hosted or used with NREL’s servers. The project allows communities to collect human-focused, multi-modal transportation data. This data can be used for programs and projects that promote holistic solutions to sustainable mobility and land-use. We will present numerous challenges in relation to privacy, maintenance, and community-building encountered while building and deploying OpenPATH that are likely to be relevant to other open-source projects in interdisciplinary domains.
