Session: We Can Do Better Than “Open Sesame”: AuthN Updates for the Modern Developer

Everyone needs authentication–and that’s not new. Neither are passwords! Even tales from antiquity feature the use of passwords–and some of those same tales tell us what happens when passwords are stolen or guessed. Simple password based authentication and authorization have had some of the same problems for literally centuries. The good news is that in 2024, developers have better options that are safer, easier, and more suitable for the modern web. In this talk we’ll explore modern authentication options available to developers today, and discuss some of the benefits and tradeoffs for security, user experience, and developer experience.
