Session: Digital Public Good: Open Source for Digital Public infrastructure

The Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) is a UN-endorsed “initiative that facilitates the discovery and deployment of open-source technologies” for digital public infrastructure (DPI) – an underlying network of components such as digital payments, identity, and data exchange systems thare are key to catalyze the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Once you’ve digested that mouthful of acronyms, as an open source enthusiast, you might notice a certain alignment of philosophy: yes… open source software should power our emerging digital society. But this challenge is not for the light-hearted. Even well-funded western governments are not paragons of successful digital transformation. Will the DPGA succeed? What does the UN know about software? And who will pay for it all?
