Session: 2 for 1: Setting Up an Open Source Fund – Key Learnings to Date / Tech Debt as Innovation

George Chellapa: Setting Up an Open Source Fund – Key Learnings to Date

NVIDIA’s Open Source Program Office (OSPO) is launching an Open Source Fund to financially support external open source projects, specifically targeting one-time, non-recurring expenses and CI/CD infrastructure. This initiative supplements our ongoing contributions to foundations, projects, and events. The fund not only bolsters external projects but also encourages NVIDIA employees to engage by nominating projects for funding, fostering deeper internal participation in the open source ecosystem.

NVIDIA’s commitment to open source is reflected in the release of over 750 projects, contributions to projects such as the Linux kernel, Python, PyTorch, Kubernetes, TensorFlow, and Universal Scene Description (USD), and active support for foundations including the Linux Foundation, PSF, PyTorch Foundation, NumFocus, and others. This case study will share our insights and lessons learned in creating the Open Source Fund, aiming to further strengthen our support for the open source community.
