Session: 2 for 1: A Tale of Autoscale: Increasing Resiliency while Reducing On-Call Toil / Accelerating Product Innovation with OSS CI as Code

Sally Wahba: A Tale of Autoscale: Increasing Resiliency while Reducing On-Call Toil

Kubernetes is “an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications”. While horizontal Pod Autoscaling (HPA) is not new to Kubernetes, our use of it is. In this burst talk learn about Day 2 operations and how HPA saved a team of engineers multiple pages in the middle of the night and improved system availability and resiliency.

This talk walks through the journey of a team of engineers with no SRE experience as they modified their services to enable HPA. Explore how they determined which metrics to use, the issues they ran into, and lessons learned while keeping a large scale, data intensive service up and running.

Leave with some pointers on what to watch out for as you enable HPA in your service.

Jenn Allen: Accelerating Product Innovation with OSS CI as Code

Imagine your CI pipelines seamlessly integrated into your application or service. What if you could test changes spanning backends, services, and user interfaces locally before merging? And what if you didn’t have to track down every readme file in a repository to understand how to test those changes?

Whether you have years of experience in software or are new to the field, you will leave with actionable strategies to enhance customer experiences, streamline development, and nurture a culture of innovation in your team.

In this session, you will learn how to:

  • Validate your features early, often, and in all stages of development
  • Integrate your pipelines seamlessly into your application or service, using the CI tool of your choice (GitHub Actions, GitLab, Jenkins, CircleCI, Tekton…)
  • Use Dagger open source functions to build a portable CI pipeline that runs the same everywhere
  • Use preview environments to validate features before release quickly
  • Use data from your local and CI pipelines in your project management and development tools to derive insights and track progress

This session will be recorded
